作品の種類 Types of craft

江戸べっ甲 Edo bekko (Edo-style tortoiseshell products)

べっ甲はタイマイというウミガメの甲羅を加工する工芸です。江戸時代に材料を張り合わせる技術が伝わり、複雑な形状・模様の品物に加工できるようになりました。
Bekko is an art of craft made of tortoiseshell, namely that of hawksbill turtle. The technique of bonding shells was brought to Japan during the Edo period, which enabled to manipulate shells in complex shapes and patterns.

作品の特徴 Special features

甲羅から切り出した数枚の材料に熱と水と圧力をかけて貼り合わせ、必要な厚さと色合い・模様を作ります。この素材を削り磨いて製品に仕上げます。 破損しても接着剤を使わず元どおりに修理することができます。
Several sheets are cut out of a shell and joined together through application of heat, water and pressure in order to achieve appropriate thickness, colour and pattern. These sheets are then planed and polished to a finished piece. Damaged bekko products can be restored without any use of glue.
