中野啓造氏に師事し津軽武者凧の指導を受ける。後に橋本禎造氏による鎧武者絵の精密で繊細な技法に魅了。現在は江戸凧作家として制作を続けている。

Unique lettering style demonstrates one of the skills of a lantern craftsman. My master used to tell me off for copying his letters during my apprenticeship. That is to say, each craftsman is expected to develop own style.

作品の種類 Types of craft

江戸凧 Edo-dako (Edo-style kite)

竹ひごで組んだ骨組に和紙を張り、江戸時代に流行した絵柄や文字を描いたもので、武者絵凧、歌舞伎凧、奴凧、字凧があります。
Edo-dako consists of a split bamboo frame wrapped in washi (Japanese paper) which is painted with popular pictures and characters of the Edo period. There are various designs, from portraits of warrior, Kabuki actor and footman to letters.

作品の特徴 Special features

古くからの技法を守り、和紙は美濃厚紙、骨は竹ひごを削り、凧糸、木綿糸で結んで制作します。彩色は墨と赤・黄・青・緑・橙の染料を原色のまま使い、金粉・銀粉も使用します。武者絵は兜の前立てを本物通りに描きます。例えば武田信玄、伊達政宗、直江兼続の大きな立物を緻密に描きます。
Following the tradition, I use the Mino washi paper. Frame is built with thin split bamboo and tied with cotton strings. Black ink, red, yellow, blue, green and orange pigments are used without mixing, and gold and silver powders are also sometimes applied. The decorations on the front of a warrior's helmet are truthfully depicted. One can see such examples of the minutely painted large decorations of Japanese legendary warriors including Takeda Shingen, Date Masamune and Naoe Kanetsugu.
